Why use our calculator?

Knowing the size of the pipeline diameter plays a key role in the organization of hot and cold water supply networks. Improperly chosen cross-section of the water supply system can lead to a drop in system performance, increased pressure and emergencies.

This calculator allows you to estimate the minimum value of the inner diameter of the pipe at a given velocity of the medium and the capacity of the pipeline. The basic formula: d = √ [(4 × Q) / (V × π)], where Q – flow rate, V – water velocity. The optimum water velocity in the pipe is from 0.6 m/s to 1.5 m/s (2-5 ft/s), the maximum is 3 m/s (10 ft/s). Note that you must enter the INNER diameter of the pipe, not the OUTSIDE.

How do I estimate pipe diameter?

  1. Input the water velocity.
  2. Enter the flow rate.
  3. Click the "Calculate" button.
